About Lauwersmeer , Netherlands

This inland sea is situated in the most northern National Park in The Netherlands. This National Park is famous for its unique and diverse vegetation and for its wildlife including many bird species.
The Lauwersmeer is an ideal place to hold a large racing event. The 2000 hectare lake is large enough to sail in wind that is not affected by trees or buildings on the shore. The lake was formed from the Lauwerszee in the 1960’s when a dyke was built to close off the tidal Reitdiep delta from the sea to prevent flooding. Around the shores of this lake are some picturesque villages. On the other side of the dyke the Waddenzee stretches along the coast of the Northern Netherlands and the nearest islands, Schiermonnikoog and Ameland can be seen from the coast. A ferry makes the 45 minute journey to Schiermonnikoog from Lauwersoog 3 or 4 times a day and the island is really worth a visit.
